Black Grace Brings Contemporary Dance to Hilo on March 4
Black Grace, New Zealand’s premier contemporary dance company, is set to captivate audiences in Hilo with a performance at the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center on March 4, 2024, at 19:00. Founded by choreographer Neil Ieremia in 1995, Black Grace has emerged as a significant cultural force, showcasing innovative dance that reflects the diverse narratives of the South Pacific.
Initially comprising ten male dancers of Pacific, Māori, and New Zealand heritage, Black Grace aims to offer a distinctive voice within the dance community. Ieremia draws inspiration from his own Samoan and New Zealand roots, creating works that transcend social, cultural, and generational divides. A press release highlights that Ieremia has profoundly influenced contemporary dance in New Zealand, establishing Black Grace as an iconic cultural brand.
Innovative Performances and Global Reach
The physicality of Black Grace’s performances is coupled with storytelling steeped in the traditions of the South Pacific. The company is known for its raw finesse, unique beauty, and powerful expression, making it one of New Zealand’s finest dance ensembles. Over the years, Black Grace has toured extensively, performing in countries such as Australia, Canada, Germany, and Japan, among others.
In 2004, the company made its U.S. debut at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, performing to sold-out crowds. Their return to the festival in 2005 further solidified their reputation, and since then, Black Grace has regularly toured North America, receiving both audience and critical acclaim.
