Celebrated Lifeguard and Family Man Lawrence C. Cocke Passes Away at 91

Lawrence C. Cocke, a beloved figure known for his remarkable contributions to life-saving and family, passed away from cardiac arrest at the age of 91. The news of his death has deeply saddened all who knew him, as he left behind a legacy defined by adventure, kindness, and extraordinary achievements.

Born in Long Beach and raised in El Segundo, Cocke developed a passion for swimming early in life. He graduated from El Segundo High School and went on to achieve a Master’s degree in Psychology from Cal State University Dominguez Hills. His educational background complemented his dynamic career and personal life.

A Life of Service and Adventure

Cocke enjoyed a distinguished career as a Lifeguard Lieutenant for 22 years, during which he became a local hero. He was involved in numerous daring rescues, including saving a sheriff’s deputy after a helicopter crash in the surf. His skills earned him the prestigious “Bronze Savage” award, a testament to his exceptional service and dedication. Remarkably, he never lost a soul during his rescue operations.

In addition to his lifeguarding career, Cocke served as an explosive specialist in the Army, where he honed his skills in demolitions. He also excelled in sports, becoming an all-European water polo goalie and was even a contender for the Olympics. After his playing days, Cocke transitioned to officiating water polo matches throughout Southern California, further contributing to the sport he loved.

Beyond sports and service, Cocke was an accomplished deep-sea fisherman, often traveling to Alaska and Hawaii to pursue his passion. He cherished his time on the water, whether it was in his boat or kayaking around Catalina.

A Family Legacy

Cocke’s personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. He is survived by his two daughters, Lorie Plasencia and Linda Casias, as well as two step-daughters, Amie and Jenni Luke. He was the proud grandfather to three granddaughters—Tara, Sara, and Cara—and a great-grandfather to four: Bella, Josie, Gabriela, and William. His family has expressed their profound love for him, highlighting the strong bond he shared with each member.

His wife, Donna Jamison Cocke, described him as her best friend and the love of her life. She is heartbroken by his passing, reflecting on the adventures they shared together. Their travels took them to various corners of the globe, where they created unforgettable memories.
