URGENT UPDATE: The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has confirmed that all northern sites will be stocked with rainbow trout just in time for the fishing opener on Saturday, October 18, 2023. This significant announcement comes after statewide stocking delays caused by unusually high temperatures this fall, a trend that has become increasingly common due to climate change.

As the weather has shifted to more appropriate fall conditions, anglers can look forward to fishing at various locations across northern Illinois. Notable sites include:

– **Cook County**: Axehead, Belleau, Busse Woods North, Green, Horsetail, Sag Quarry East, and Wolf Lake at William W. Powers State Recreation Area.
– **DuPage County**: Grove, Pickerel, Silver.
– **Kankakee County**: Bird Park Quarry, Rock Creek at Kankakee River State Park.
– **Kendall County**: Big Lake at Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area.
– **Lake County**: Sand Lake at Illinois Beach State Park.
– **McHenry County**: Spring Grove Hatchery Pond, Lake Atwood.
– **Will County**: Lake Strini, Van Horn Woods.

For those planning to fish, be advised that a valid fishing license and an inland trout stamp are required. The daily catch limit is set at five trout per angler.

The IDNR has also released a list of 14 downstate waters that will not be stocked prior to the opener, which may affect fishing plans for some enthusiasts. This news serves as a reminder of the impacts of weather on fishing conditions and the importance of staying informed.

With the trout opener just hours away, this is an excellent opportunity for families and fishing enthusiasts to engage in outdoor activities, boosting local economies and fostering community connections.

As excitement builds leading up to the opener, anglers are encouraged to prepare and take advantage of the newly stocked sites. Stay tuned for further updates as the opener approaches.
