Urgent Crime Reports: Assaults, Thefts, and Vandalism Surge

UPDATE: A wave of crime incidents has shaken Rowan County, with multiple reports of assaults, thefts, and vandalism emerging over the past few days. Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant following a series of troubling events that unfolded between January 20 and January 21.

In a shocking incident on January 20, authorities reported a vehicle pursuit on the northbound side of Interstate 85 in China Grove at 12:06 a.m.. Just hours later, at 2:13 a.m., police responded to another incident on the same interstate, where individuals were found in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

A serious violation occurred at Mt. Moriah Church Road in Landis at 6:22 p.m., where possession or concealment of a weapon was reported. Additionally, a burglary by unlawful entry at North Cannon Boulevard, Kannapolis, was reported, with the incident occurring between midnight on November 1, 2025, and midnight on January 14, 2026.

The crime spree continued with a larceny reported on Old Mocksville Road in Salisbury between noon on January 13 and noon on January 15. Authorities confirmed the report on January 20.

In a separate case, David Ray Canupp, aged 37, was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including attempting to obtain property by false pretenses and felony breaking and entering on January 20.

The violence escalated on January 21, with an assault involving a knife reported in the 1400 block of Tilman Street between 6:45 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.. Residents are alarmed by the increase in violent encounters, prompting local officials to address safety concerns.

In another alarming incident, a discharge of a firearm was reported in the 500 block of South Craige Street at 1:09 a.m. on January 21. Vandalism was also reported in the 1100 block of South Main Street between January 17 and January 21, with authorities working to assess the damage.

One of the most significant financial losses occurred due to fraud in the 800 block of Fairmont Avenue, where the estimated loss totaled $16,800. This fraud was reported on January 21, 2026, involving incidents that took place between midnight on December 30, 2025, and 2 p.m. on January 16, 2026.

As law enforcement agencies ramp up their efforts to tackle these rising crime rates, community members are encouraged to report any suspicious activities. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.
