Urgent: Gas Explosion in NYC High-Rise Kills 1, Injures 14

UPDATE: A devastating gas explosion rocked a high-rise apartment building in the Bronx early October 28, 2023, killing one person and injuring 14 others as temperatures plummeted into single digits. Firefighters rushed to the scene shortly before 12:30 a.m., where flames consumed the top floors of the 17-story building.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as residents leaned out of windows, calling for help while flames engulfed their homes. Fire Chief John Esposito confirmed that firefighters were investigating reports of a gas odor on the 15th and 16th floors when the explosion occurred, resulting in significant structural damage across approximately a dozen apartments and fires in ten units on the affected floors.

Authorities report that one individual tragically lost their life, while another remains in critical condition. Five others sustained serious injuries, and eight more were treated for minor injuries. The identity of the deceased has yet to be released.

The building, formerly managed by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), has been under private management since 2024. City officials stated that renovation work on the natural gas system had been completed and inspected prior to this incident.

“This is an incredible tragedy. We’re sending all our thoughts to the families involved,” said Leila Bozorg, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning, during a morning news conference. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that all utilities in the building have been shut down and all 148 apartments evacuated. A reception center has been established at a nearby school, where the American Red Cross is providing support for displaced residents.

“Today has been a deeply frightening and devastating morning for them. They are not alone. Our city will stand by them and do everything in our power to help them get back on their feet,” Mayor Mamdani emphasized, addressing the urgent needs of those affected.

Over 200 fire and emergency crew members battled the blaze, with reports of firefighters briefly trapped in an elevator during the chaos. “There were injuries. It was a very, very difficult night on a very cold night, which caused even more difficulty,” stated Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore.

The explosion’s cause is currently under investigation. This incident raises significant concerns about safety in aging buildings, particularly as around half a million New Yorkers live in properties managed by NYCHA, the largest housing authority in the U.S. Many of these buildings date back to the 1940s and 50s, raising alarms about their structural integrity and maintenance.

In 2019, a federal monitor was appointed to address chronic issues within NYCHA properties, including lead paint and mold. When the monitor concluded their five-year term in 2024, they highlighted the persistent “poor physical state of NYCHA’s buildings” as a major concern for residents.

This tragic event follows a similar incident in October when a massive chimney collapsed after a gas explosion in a Bronx housing authority building, although there were no injuries reported at that time.
