Iranian Protesters Face Torture and Sexual Violence in Detention
Reports indicate that detained Iranian demonstrators are suffering severe torture and sexual violence at the hands of the regime’s security forces. The Iranian government has faced ongoing mass protests since late December 2022, as thousands of citizens take to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the country’s deteriorating economic situation.
According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, the confirmed death toll from the crackdown on these protests has surpassed 7,000. In addition to the fatalities, law enforcement agencies have conducted mass detentions, raising concerns about the treatment of those incarcerated. One eyewitness, who requested anonymity for safety reasons, detailed harrowing accounts of abuse, stating, “I am most worried about the people who got arrested. They are raping men and women in jail. They are being raped every day by a group of police.”
Another individual, described as an Iranian refugee, recounted experiences of gang rape among those detained. They stated, “All of us who were arrested in prison were subjected to gang rape by masked men, at gunpoint and under their mockery.” The refugee further alleged that some female detainees had their uteruses removed, claiming, “Some of the women’s bodies that were returned to their families were missing their wombs so that the crimes could not be traced or investigated.”
Eyewitness accounts from the protests have indicated that Iranian security forces have opened fire on unarmed individuals, including children, women, and the elderly. Observers reported that authorities shot at “everyone indiscriminately” without regard for age or gender.
The demonstrations began in response to Iran’s worsening economic and labor crises under the leadership of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Since their inception, many protesters have rallied around the calls of Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, who lives in exile in the United States. His father, the Shah, was overthrown during the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Protesters have reported the use of tear gas and chemical agents, as well as live ammunition, pellet weapons, and paintball guns to disperse crowds.
As the protests continued, a significant police presence was observed outside the Iranian Embassy in London on March 11, 2023. Images shared on social media showcased police vehicles stationed near the embassy, located at 16 Princes Gate. Demonstrators have gathered there regularly to show solidarity with the Iranian people.
In response to the escalating violence, former US President Donald Trump cautioned Iran against executing protesters and assured participants in the demonstrations that support was forthcoming. Trump has since issued threats of potential military action against Iran if the regime fails to engage in a nuclear deal.
The ongoing situation in Iran continues to draw international attention, with human rights organizations calling for immediate action to address the reported abuses and violence against protesters. The plight of those detained highlights a troubling pattern of repression as the government seeks to quell dissent amidst growing discontent among its citizens.
