Sydney Holds Vigil for Victims of Bondi Beach Attack Before New Year

As the New Year approached, thousands gathered at the Sydney Harbour Bridge to hold a solemn vigil for the victims of the December 14 attack at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach, which resulted in the tragic deaths of 15 people. The atmosphere was heavy with grief as attendees stood in silence for one minute, illuminated by candlelight and the glow of mobile phone torches, just one hour before midnight.

The Harbour Bridge was illuminated in white, and a menorah, a significant symbol of Judaism, was projected onto the bridge’s pylons, creating a poignant backdrop for the gathering. Clover Moore, the Lord Mayor of Sydney, extended an invitation to those at home and along the harbour to join the vigil. “I invite people at home and around the harbor to join with us by shining their phone torch in solidarity to show the Jewish community that we stand with them, and that we reject violence, fear and antisemitism,” she stated.

The horrific shooting on Bondi Beach saw two men open fire on attendees during a festive celebration, marking the worst mass shooting in Australia in decades. In addition to the fatalities, numerous individuals sustained injuries, with the attack prompting widespread condemnation across the nation.

Authorities reported that one of the gunmen was shot and killed by police, while his son, Naveed Akram, 24, was also shot and subsequently arrested. He faces multiple charges, including murder and terrorism. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese characterized the attack as motivated by “Islamic State ideology,” though police indicated there was no evidence linking the assailants to a larger terrorist cell.

This incident has heightened concerns within Australia’s Jewish community, particularly in light of rising antisemitic sentiments following the escalation of violence in the region after the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
