“Tirrenica” Explores Southern Italy Beyond Stereotypes at Festival
A new documentary titled Tirrenica, directed by Rosario Minervini, is set to premiere at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival on March 10, 2024. The film presents a deep dive into the lives of individuals living along the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway, offering an unfiltered view of Southern Italy that challenges common cultural stereotypes.
The Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway was heralded in the 1960s as a monumental engineering feat, aiming to bridge the economic divide between the struggling south and the more prosperous north of Italy. Despite its initial promise, the project faced numerous delays, taking over 60 years to complete and failing to deliver on its lofty ambitions. As the film’s synopsis notes, the reality of the highway’s impact is far removed from the expectations set forth at its inception.
Minervini’s documentary showcases a diverse range of characters, including a man who, after losing his job, becomes a shepherd and lives in a caravan devoid of basic amenities like water and electricity. Other featured individuals include those who salvage and repair discarded objects, a target shooter, and Francesca, an activist fighting for civil rights. These figures are presented with evocative titles such as The Revolutionary, The Hoarder, The Shepherd, and The Sharpshooter.
Unveiling the Reality of Southern Italy
As the narrative unfolds, Tirrenica examines how the long-delayed highway project became emblematic of the regions it connects, from the outskirts of Naples to Salerno, but for all the wrong reasons. The film critiques the structural issues within the Italian state, effectively illustrating the concept of a “country of two speeds,” where the north thrives while the south languishes.
Minervini’s work is described as a meticulous exploration of the stark contrast between the ambitious dreams of the past and the unvarnished realities faced by those living in the shadow of what has become a “phantom project.” He articulates this sentiment in his director’s statement: “Tirrenica is an observational film that explores Southern Italy beyond its cultural clichés. Set along the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway, the film unfolds as a visual and emotional journey through the lives of those who inhabit its margins.”
The documentary is expected to resonate with audiences, offering a unique perspective on a region often overshadowed by stereotypes. The trailer, recently released, showcases a blend of contemporary and archival footage, vibrant characters, and the film’s evocative music, hinting at the emotional depth of the stories shared.
A Journey into Southern Italy
As audiences prepare for the premiere, Tirrenica promises to transport viewers to a side of Italy rarely depicted in tourist guides. Through its exploration of solitude, survival, and quiet resistance, the film aims to illuminate the struggles and resilience of those living along the iconic highway.
In a world where infrastructure projects often promise progress but deliver disappointment, Tirrenica serves as a timely reminder of the human stories that lie beneath the surface of grand ambitions. It invites viewers to reconsider their perceptions of Southern Italy and understand the complexities faced by its residents. With its world premiere on the horizon, the documentary is poised to make a significant impact at the festival and beyond.
