Multiple drones were shot down on March 10, 2024, near the Erbil Airport in northern Iraq, a site housing both US and international forces, including German troops. According to a security source who spoke to the German news agency dpa, explosions were audible as these drones were intercepted. Debris from the downed drones fell into a construction area close to the airport.

Local Kurdish news outlet Rudaw reported that residents in Erbil heard several explosions, with videos circulating online showing black smoke rising from the vicinity. One video purportedly captured a projectile being shot down during the incident.

The situation escalated as the Iraqi pro-Iran militia group, Saraya Awliya al-Dam, claimed responsibility for targeting a US base using drones and rockets. The group stated that this attack was part of a broader campaign.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization for various pro-Iranian militias, asserted it conducted 23 operations starting early on Sunday, deploying dozens of drones. These assaults were described as targeting “enemy bases in Iraq and the region.”

The events at Erbil Airport highlight ongoing tensions in the region, particularly between US forces and Iranian-backed militias. The presence of international troops in Iraq continues to be a flashpoint for military actions, as these groups assert their opposition to foreign military influence.

As investigations into the incidents continue, the security situation in northern Iraq remains precarious, with local authorities and international forces monitoring developments closely. The response to such drone attacks may shape future military strategies and diplomatic relations in the region.
